SwampDogs Unable To Close Out Wilmington

by Jordan Lank

The SwampDogs surrendered two runs in the eighth inning to the Wilmington Sharks in a matinee loss Monday, 3-2.

The 'Dogs opened the scoring in the fourth inning, when Alex Kachler continued his hot stretch of hitting by plating Carson Bartels with an RBI double. The Fayetteville backstop drove Bartels home in the sixth as well, and picked up his team-leading 25th and 26th RBIs in the contest.

The Sharks got on the board in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run to narrow the deficit to one. Wilmington scored the tying and eventually-winning runs in its half of the eighth, when the Fayetteville bullpen surrendered a sacrifice fly and an RBI single.

Jose Rodriguez hurled his best start of the season for the SwampDogs, allowing one run on five hits over 5 ⅓ innings. The St. John's right-hander K'd six batters — his second-highest total of the year — and struck out four of five Sharks between the third and fourth innings.

Seth Beard impressed with a scoreless seventh inning, lowering his team-leading ERA to 1.29 on the 2019 campaign.

Pearce Howard extended his on-base streak to 16 consecutive games, slapping a double in a 2-for-4 afternoon.

The SwampDogs will enjoy their second day off in three days on Tuesday before returning to "The Swamp" on Wednesday for Disney Night. Come dressed in your finest Disney attire as gates open at 6 PM and first pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
