SwampDogs Outmatched By Sharks

 By Jordan Lank

The Fayetteville SwampDogs dropped their third straight road contest in Wilmington after a 5-2 loss to the Sharks Saturday night.

The SwampDogs opened the scoring in the second inning after Carson Bartels crossed the plate on an overthrow by the Sharks defense. Then, Sean McGeehan deposited a lead-off home run over the left-field wall in the third.

That was all the offense the SwampDogs could manage, though. Wilmington scored four runs in the fourth inning and never looked back, tacking another on in the eighth for good measure.

It looked like the 'Dogs were mounting a rally in the top of the eighth, when Alex Kachler and Austin Bost hit back-to-back two-out singles. But, a sharp liner off the bat of Bartels was snagged on a leaping play by Sharks first baseman Cory Everett.

Josh Plummer made his Fayetteville debut as the starting pitcher in the ballgame. Plummer, from Tennessee, went 3.2 innings and allowed just two hits, but was tagged for four runs and the loss.

John Vanderploeg had a bounceback outing, throwing 2.1 innings in relief of Plummer. Vanderploeg struck out four in his second appearance of the season.

The SwampDogs will look to even the season series at two apiece against the Sharks on Monday, when they return to Wilmington for the second time in three days. Then, the 'Dogs return home Tuesday for their second tilt of the season versus the Catawba Valley Stars on Local Superhero Night, and will conclude the brief homestand on Wednesday for Fishin' in the Park Night against Morehead City. Gates will open at "The Swamp" at 6 PM and first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 on each night.

The Fayetteville SwampDogs are members of the The Coastal Plain League and are in their 19th Summer of fun.  The Coastal Plain League is the nation's premier summer collegiate baseball league.
