The Fayetteville SwampDogs kicked off the 2019 season with a 17-4 win over Catawba Valley Stars on Tuesday night. The Stars took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. That was answered by the SwampDogs in the bottom of the inning on a solo shot by Brandon Talley and a sacrifice fly by Cole Swiger. Swiger added another sacrifice fly in the fourth to give the SwampDogs a 3-2 lead.
The fourth inning was also capped by a rare triple play defensively by the SwampDogs. With runners at second and third, Anthony Jarvis hit a liner at Short Stop Will Karp. Karp threw the runner out at second who failed to tag up. Butler, the runner on third tried taking home on the play and second baseman Trent Harris threw him out at the plate.
After trailing 4-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth, the SwampDogs added four runs in the inning to and never looked back. The SwampDogs would add two more runs in the sixth and eight more in the seventh to win their first game this year.
The SwampDogs next game is a road matchup on Thursday in Wilmington to play the Sharks. The SwampDogs will then return home on Friday for their first fireworks extravaganza of the year on Friday night. They will host the Peninsula Pilots, presented by Campbell University. The gates will open at 6:00 and the first 500 fans will receive a magnet schedule, courtesy of Freeman and Barrett, CPAs and Village Family Dental.
