The Fayetteville SwampDogs have announced the first two players on their 2019 roster. Both players are infielders and go to school at Georgia Gwinnett. The Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies are the Preseason Number 1 team in the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) poll.
Cam Coursey is a sophomore for Georgia Gwinnett. As a true freshman, he led the nation with an eye-popping batting average of .485 with 49 RBIs while scoring 60 runs. Defensively at 2nd Base, Coursey also won a Gold Glove with a fielding percentage of .980 and committed only 3 errors on the year. Coursey was named as an All American, while winning the 2018 Independent Institutions Player of the Year. Coursey is also a Pre-Season All American for 2019.
SwampDogs Head Coach, David Anderson said about Coursey, "Cam is going to be a spark plug for us. What he did for his team last year speaks for itself. He can play any position in the infield and is an extremely tough out from the left side. He fits the profile of what we're looking for both on and off the field!"
Joining Coursey will be Grizzly teammate and utility player, Nick Barnes. Barnes also had a solid freshman year at Georgia Gwinnett, hitting .367 with 7 HRs while driving in 49 RBI and scoring 41 runs. Barnes also boasted a .909 fielding percentage, only committing 4 errors on the season. He was named a 1st All Association of Independent Institutions Team selection.
Anderson said of Barnes, Nick is a great addition for our team. He's a blue-collar player who can do a lot of damage at the plate. He shows a unique ability as he hit for both power and average last year as a freshman. He's a middle of the order type of bat who has the ability to play 1B, play the OF, and DH. A true competitor!"
