SwampDogs Bring Regular Season to a Close

To paraphrase the legendary Los Angeles Lakers' broadcaster Chick Hearn, the season's in the refrigerator: the door's closed, the lights are out, the eggs are cooling, the butter's getting hard and the Jell-O is jiggling.

The SwampDogs officially put the 2018 Coastal Plain League regular season to bed Saturday night in Holly Springs, taking on the Salamanders in a game that would serve as tune up for the upcoming Petitt Cup Playoffs.

The SwampDogs were able to get to the opposing pitchers early on but faltered a bit late, eventually dropping the game 10-6. Fayetteville ends the year in second place in the East Division at 24-25, including an 11-13 record in the season's second half.

Despite the loss, the SwampDogs continued to show the improved approach they have demonstrated at the plate recently. Fayetteville has now scored 25 runs on 30 hits over the last three contests, a solid output in the final week of the regular season.

Natale Monastra (Xavier) and Trent Franson (Houston Baptist) stood out in the batter's box Saturday, combining for five hits in nine tries. Monastra finished the game with a team-high 3 hits, including a double and an RBI, while Franson added a single and double of his own while scoring once. Fayetteville also got a double from outfielder Jay Hayes (Florida Gulf Coast) as well as a triple from designated hitter Logan Jarvis (Belmont).

The SwampDogs are not done playing baseball this summer! Fayetteville will be on the road Sunday to take on the Morehead City Marlins in the East Semifinal. The first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., and the winner will advance to the Divisional Championships on Tuesday.
