The Fayetteville SwampDogs took both games in Virginia against Peninsula and Petersburg to slide back into second place in the East.
On Thursday night, Fayetteville got off to a quick start against Peninsula thanks to a five-run second inning, beating them 8-5.
Six SwampDogs had two hits against the first place Pilots and Mitchell Kranson (California) added his ninth double of the season. Chad Whitehead (UNC-Pembroke) and Ransom LaLonde (St. Edward’s) led the way with two RBIs apiece.
Shawn Talkington (Emporia State) had a respectable outing on the mound en route to his first win of the season. He tossed six innings of one run baseball and he struck out five batters. Travis Hissong (Wright State) picked up his second save of the season after striking out the three of the five batters he faced.
The SwampDogs carried that momentum into Friday night’s contest against the Petersburg Generals and won 3-2.
Third year returner Jimmie Davis (UNC-Pembroke) threw an inspiring start against the Generals. Though he did allow two runs in his seven innings, he struck out a team, season-high nine batters and allowed just three hits.
Fayetteville took the early 3-0 lead after three innings and they never looked back. Derek Gibson (Southeast Missouri State) and John Rooney (Siena) each went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Hissong closed out the game in the ninth on back-to-back nights to pick up his third save. He now has 21 strikeouts in 13 and two-thirds innings.
