Fayetteville, N.C. — The Fayetteville SwampDogs grab back-to-back home victories in a doubleheader against the Holly Springs Salamanders at The Swamp. The Dogs win by a final score of 8-7 in Game 1 and 4-3 in Game 2. The first game of the doubleheader was a continuation of the July 16th game between both teams that was suspended due to heavy storms. The second contest of the twin bill was a seven inning contest. SwampDogs improve to 16-31 overall and 7-13 in the CPL East division. Salamanders fall to 18-27 and 8-11 in the second half of the summer season.
Holly Springs led by a score of 4-3 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, resuming the previously suspended game. The Salamanders extended their lead to 6-3 in the top half of the sixth inning on a two-run home run from designated hitter Dillon Stewart (UNC Greensboro). The SwampDogs cut the deficit to a two-run ballgame at 6-4 as first baseman Tyler Tharp (VMI) came home to score from third base on an error by the Holly Springs second baseman in the bottom of the sixth.
The Dogs would come all the way back after the stretch in the home half of the seventh inning and rally for four runs to gain a late 8-6 advantage. It began with an RBI walk from Tyler Tharp scoring center fielder Josh Crump (Coastal Carolina) to make it a 6-5 game. An RBI single from second baseman Kieton Rivers (Coastal Carolina) tied the contest up at 6-6. Right fielder Hunter Morris (Eastern Illinois) then followed with an RBI fielder’s choice to give the SwampDogs their first lead of the evening at 7-6. The eighth run was brought in on an RBI single from David Summerfield (Millersville).
Holly Springs would trim the deficit to 8-7 in the top frame of the ninth, but the Dogs hold on for the victory.
SwampDogs starting pitcher Will Edwards (Chowan) got the win and improved his record to 1-2. Salamanders reliever Jay Cortese (Slippery Rock) took the loss and fell to 1-1. Matt Jeffrey (Frostburg State) earned his first save of the season.
The Salamanders struck first to take an early 1-0 advantage in the top of the third inning on an RBI double from center fielder Brandon Riley (UNC-Chapel Hill). However, Fayetteville would come back once again in the bottom half of the third and bring across three runs to take a 3-1 lead.
The scoring began on an RBI single from left fielder Dan Leckie (Lafayette) to knot the contest up at 1-1. The go-ahead run was driven in on another SwampDogs run-scoring single off the bat of catcher Hunter Dolshun (UMBC) to go ahead 2-1. An insurance run was added on an RBI groundout from Tharp to give the SwampDogs a two-run cushion.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Dogs would add one more run on an RBI single from right fielder AJ Gallo (Towson) to extend their advantage out to 4-1. Holly Springs would attempt the comeback trail in the top of the ninth, bringing across two runs to make it just a one-run ballgame at 4-3. However, the SwampDogs would hold on for the 4-3 triumph.
Fayetteville starting pitcher Frank Fraschetti (Harford Community College) got the complete game win and improved his record to 1-2. Fraschetti put together a masterful performance going seven innings allowing three earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Holly Springs starter Kyle Staats took the loss and fell to 0-1 on the season.
The Fayetteville SwampDogs are back in action tomorrow night at The Swamp where they host the Wilmington Sharks in a CPL East showdown. Come out to the ballpark for Summertime St. Paddy’s Day presented by Healy Wholesale. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
