Fayetteville, N.C. – – – The Fayetteville SwampDogs have signed a talented JUCO prospect in Hinds Community College (Raymond, Miss.) sophomore infielder Braedon Barrett (Lake Charles, La.) and Delta State University redshirt sophomore third baseman/outfielder Juwan Burney (Arlington, Tenn.) for the 2017 season.

Barrett signed his National Letter of Intent to play for the Tulane University Green Wave in 2018. Barrett began his collegiate career at Northwestern State University before transferring to Hinds CC. During this season at Hinds, Barrett ranks fourth on the Eagles with a .342 batting average. Barrett has tallied 25 total hits including four doubles, three triples and one home run. He also holds a .521 slugging percentage in the 2017 campaign.

In the summer of 2015, Barrett played for the Acadiana Cane Cutters of the Texas Collegiate League where he appeared in 33 games and scored 12 runs. Barrett also posted 15 hits with two doubles and two RBIs.

Burney saw action in 21 games with 15 starts as a redshirt freshman at Delta State. The Statesmen are a traditional NCAA Division II power, coming off a 42-17 season in 2016 and their 13th Gulf South Conference Tournament championship.  Burney hit .321 with three doubles, one triple and a home run with 13 RBIs in 2016. He also scored 15 runs and stole three bases in three attempts.

So far in the 2017 season, Burney has played in 33 total games and has started in 29 of them. He currently hits for a .311 average with five doubles, one triple and two home runs. He also has tallied 18 RBIs and a team-best eight stolen bases in eight attempts.

Burney lettered in baseball and basketball at Arlington High School where he set program records for most hits in a single season (62) and highest batting average (.534). Burney’s stellar season performance earned him 2014 District Player of the Year in his senior campaign.

“Barrett and Burney should fit immediately into our lineup this season,” said SwampDogs head coach Matt Hollod. “They give us depth in the middle of our order and will play an integral part in our success this summer.”
