SwampDogs Sign a Stetson Hatter

Fayetteville, N.C. – – The Fayetteville SwampDogs have announced the signing of Stetson University sophomore first baseman Michael Spooner (Boca Raton, Fla.) for the 2017 season.

Spooner has started all 30 games so far in the 2017 season for the Hatters, hitting for a .297 average with two home runs, four doubles and 25 RBIs. He is also second on the team with 21 runs scored, while stealing five bases in as many attempts.

“Mike is a very solid player who is currently in Stetson’s everyday lineup,” said SwampDogs head coach Matt Hollod.  “Mike will give us a left-handed option at both 1B and in the outfield.”

As a freshman in 2016, Spooner saw action in 32 total contests, starting six of those games. He posted four hits in 35 at bats, while tallying five RBIs and walking five times. Spooner also scored two runs in his first collegiate campaign.

Spooner was a stand-out player at Boca Raton Community High School, finishing his career with an impressive .407 batting average. He was a first team All-County selection when he batted .455 with 29 RBIs in his senior season, while also being named to the 2015 Senior All-Star Team.

In his junior season at Boca Raton, Spooner hit for a stellar .430 average, posted a .489 on-base percentage and .595 slugging percentage. In addition, he earned honorable mention All-American accolades by Perfect Game. Spooner was ranked the number 130 player in the state of Florida and number 500 player in the nation out of high school.
