SwampDogs’ fight comes up short against the Tobs.

Wilson N.C. – The Fayetteville SwampDogs (4-4) came up short Friday Night at Fleming Stadium against the Wilson Tobs (3-5) with a score of 5-2.

The Tobs got things going in the bottom of the first when they got on the board after a Zack Smith (UNC Charlotte) base hit through the left side scoring C.J. Ballard (Georgia Southern University). Nick Ernst (Miami of Ohio) worked out of the inning leaving a runner stranded on first after getting a fly out to the infield to end the inning.

Ernst kept the Tobs off balance through the second and the third, giving up only one hit. In the bottom of the fourth, the Tobs started off the inning with back to back base hits followed by a sacrifice groundout to SwampDogs’ third baseman, Juwan Burney (Delta State University) moving both runners in scoring position. Carson McCurdy (Mt Olive University) then reached on an error which allowed two to score upping the Tobs lead 3-0.

In the top of the fifth, the SwampDogs started to put some pressure on after drawing two walks from Justin Hawkins (Clemson) and Braedon Barrett (Tulane University), putting Hawkins in scoring position. Austin Edgette (Bloomsburg) hit a hard line drive that the Tobs pitcher, Sam Luchansky (Belmont Abbey College) snagged ending the threat.

Both teams remained scoreless until the top of the seventh when the SwampDogs got on the board due to a lead off triple to right center off the bat of Jayson Newman (Cal State Northridge). Burney hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Newman to close the gap to 3-1. The Tobs quickly answered though scoring two in the bottom of the seventh.

Jacob Williamson (Navy) got things going with a base hit and later reached second due to an error, allowing Jordan Clark (Concord University) to reach on a fielder’s choice. They then loaded the bases after a Brady Lloyd (East Carolina University) bunt and followed with a base hit from Roberto Rivera (UNC Pembroke). The Tobs finished the inning with three hits and scored two runs making the score 5-1.

Barrett led off the top of the eighth with a solo shot over the left center fence, but the SwampDogs couldn’t get anything else going on offense and left Mike Spooner (Stetson) stranded on first after he laced a base hit through the right side.

Evan Flohr (Cypress College) shut down the Tobs in the bottom of the eighth which brought up Newman to lead off the top of the ninth. He got on after getting hit by a pitch and Johnathan Allen (San Francisco) later drew a walk putting runner on first and second for the SwampDogs. Tobs pitcher K.J. McAllister (North Caolina A&T) worked out of the inning however ending the game with a final score of 5-2.
