SwampDogs’ Fight Comes Up Short Against the Marlins

Morehead City, N.C. – The Fayetteville SwampDogs (5-5) fell to the Morehead City Marlins (4-6) Sunday night at Big Rock Stadium.


The SwampDogs got off to an early start, getting on the board in the top of the first. Juwan Burney (Delta State) reached on an error and advanced to second when Jameel Edney (Bethune-Cookman) drew a walk. Mike Spooner (Stetson) followed with a base hit loading the bases and Nic Perkins (Drury) reach on an error allowing Burney to score giving the SwampDogs an early 1-0 lead.


The Marlins quickly answered when Sean Mason (Appalachian) led off the inning with a walk followed by a Jackson Ware (Mercer) double putting two runners in scoring position. Derek Olenchuk (Newberry) hit a ground ball to SwampDogs’ shortstop Braedon Barrett (Tulane) scoring Mason. Kyle Skeels (Coastal Carolina) then singled, scoring Ware making the score 2-1 Marlins.


The score remained 2-1 Marlins until the bottom of the fourth when Skeels hit a single and Wesley Weeks (North Florida) homered lengthening their lead to 4-1. Peyton Reesman (Pittsburgh) struck out the two that followed, getting out of the inning.


In the bottom of the fifth, Mason singled for the Marlins and Ware reached on a fielder’s choice. Both runners moved into scoring position on an error and Chandler Corley (Armstrong) singled to left field bringing in Mason.


Perkins and Justin Hawkins (Clemson) both walked and Jonathan Allen (San Francisco) reached on a fielder’s choice, moving Perkins to third. After a wild pitch from Cody Whiting (Pittsburgh State) Perkins scored making the game 5-2.


Ryan Clinch (UNC-Greensboro) led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and Steven Taylor (Mercer) walked for the Marlins. Ware grounded out allowing Clinch and Taylor to advance to second and third. Corley singled, scoring Clinch and after an error, Taylor scored.


In the top of the eighth, the SwampDogs pushed one more across after Perkins and Allen walked and Marquise Lanier (Chowan) singled loading the bases. Alex Hull (Cal State Northridge) drew a walk bringing in Perkins, but Marlins pitcher Joseph Whitt (Lander) came into the game and got out of the inning with three people on sealing the win.


The SwampDogs return to The Swamp Monday, June 12, 2017 when they take on the Savannah Bananas at 7:05 p.m. for Go Bananas night.
