Fayetteville SwampDogs starting pitcher Kaeson Wilson (NC A&T) tossed a solid outing on the mound as he threw for six innings, allowing only one earned run on five hits with three punch outs. The ‘Dogs fall to the Wilmington Sharks by a final score of 3-1 from the Buck Hardee Field at Legion Stadium in Wilmington, N.C. SwampDogs fall to 14-31 overall and 4-14 in the CPL East division. Sharks improve to 29-17 and 13-6 in the second half of the summer season.
Wilmington struck first on a wild pitch scoring Sharks center fielder Brett Smith (Bucknell) from third base to give the home team an early 1-0 lead. The SwampDogs then tied the ballgame at 1-1 on an RBI single from first baseman Tyler Tharp (VMI) in the top half of the fourth inning.
The Sharks would soon break the tie in the home half of the sixth to gain a 2-1 advantage. Wilmington tacked on an insurance run to extend their lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the eighth.
Wilmington starting pitcher Connor Riley (USC Aiken) got the win and improved his overall record to 6-3. Riley tossed a complete game and recorded his 100th strikeout of the season becoming the third pitcher in Coastal Plain League history to achieve that milestone. Kaeson Wilson took the loss and fell to 2-2 on the season.
The Fayetteville SwampDogs are back in action tomorrow night for a doubleheader against the Holly Springs Salamanders with the first game beginning at 6:05 p.m. The doubleheader will pick up in the fourth inning as the original contest was suspended from the Saturday, July 16th game. The second game of the twin bill will commence 20 minutes after the conclusion of the first and will be a seven inning ballgame. It will be the 12th annual Family Fun Night and Bobblehead Giveaway at The Swamp powered by BOB 96.5FM. The gates will open at 5 p.m.
