The Fayetteville SwampDogs fell to the Peninsula Pilots on Wednesday night at War Memorial Stadium 10-5.
The Dogs (12-26, 3-9) jumped on the board in the first with a leadoff homerun by Kieton Rivers (Coastal Carolina), but the Pilots (27-13, 8-5) pushed one across in the second inning to tie. Darian Carpenter (VCU) drew a walk and was moved to third by a single through the right side by Kyle McPherson (JMU). Logan Augustine (Lincoln Memorial) then reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Carpenter.
The Dogs took charge in the top of the third, plating two more runs. The Pilots battled back with an RBI single up the middle scoring the runner who was hit by a pitch.
The bottom of the seventh sealed the deal for the Pilots, as four runs were added to the board.
The Dogs did not go down without a fight, adding a pair of two-out runs to the board and closing the gap 7-5. Michael Bell (Georgia) doubled down the right field line, advancing Logan Corrigan (JMU) who reached on a walk. Hunter Morris (Eastern Illinois) singled up the middle, scoring both runners.
The Pilots would put up three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to put the finishing touches on the game.
The SwampDogs remain on the road, traveling to Morehead City to face the Marlins for the final time this regular season. They return home on Friday, July 22nd for Christmas in July. Due to a rain shortened affair, the Dogs will don their pink jerseys to complete the auction to raise money for the Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation’s Friends of the Cancer Center.
