FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. –Leadership, consistency, and hard work are qualities that the Military is known for instilling into its’ cadets. SwampDog fans will see those on display with Virginia Military Institute Keydet Tyler Tharp, who will be a force in the Fayetteville lineup this summer.
Tharp has been a fixture at first baseman for the Keydets, starting 86 games the past two seasons. The left-hander is a solid 6’3, 195 lbs, from Virginia Beach, Va. As a junior this season, Tharp has belted a career best seven home runs while driving in 22 runs.
“Tyler will provide a power bat from the left side for us this summer,” SwampDogs Head Coach Anthony Williams commented. “We look for him to be a presence in the middle of our lineup as well as a leader on and off the field. He will play an important role in our push to bring the Petitt Cup to Fayetteville”
As a sophomore, Tharp entrenched himself as a starter with consistent play including hitting in eight of the team’s first nine games. All told, he racked up 52 hits in 49 starts in 2015.
Tharp is yet another SwampDog with leadership and accolades in his background. In 2013, he was First Team All-State as a first baseman at Kempsville High School in Virginia while leading the Beach District in batting with a .468 clip his senior year. His prowess transcended baseball at Kempsville, where he was a captain and four year letterwinner, culminating in the Male Athlete of the Year Award in 2013.
Virginia Military Institute was founded in 1839 in Lexington, Virgina. The Keydets are a NCAA Division I program in the Southern Conference. They are coached by Jonathan Hadra, a four-year letterman and 2004 graduate of VMI, in his second full season as the Head Coach.
The Fayetteville SwampDogs home opener for the 2016 season is Wednesday, June 1st. Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 910-426-5900, or by visiting www.goswampdogs.com/tickets.
