The presentation of the $1,000 Grainger Barrett Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Lumbee River EMC’s Sean Sanderson of Purnell Swett High School, who showed tremendous hustle throughout the game. At the plate, Sean recorded a double and run scored, while also pitching the final inning of the game, striking out one and earning the save.
Earlier in the day, each player was invited to take part in a luncheon catered by Fazoli’s at the Kiwanis Recreation Center. Each player got a chance to interact with their new teammates and receive great insight on what it takes to succeed after high school by guest speaker, Dave Eavenson, Assistant Director of Athletics at Methodist University.
The game celebrates the accomplishments of local high school seniors and gives them an opportunity to play a final game in their high school uniforms. It’s hosted by the Fayetteville SwampDogs and presented by Lumbee River EMC and South River EMC.
The Coastal Plain League is the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 62 alums – including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander – make their Major League debut thus far.
