The Sixth Annual Sandhills High School Senior Showcase took place on Sunday, June 9 at J.P. Riddle Stadium. Team Lumbee River EMC defeated Team South River EMC 2-1 in a game limited to 7 innings due to inclement weather.

The Lumbee River EMC team was coached by Richard Seagroves (Western Harnett) and comprised of recently graduated high school seniors from schools in the Cape Fear/Sandhills region such as Fairmont, Hoke County, Red Springs, South Robeson, St. Pauls, Purnell Sweet, Gray’s Creek, Westover, Douglas Byrd and Western Harnett. Team South River EMC was coached by Sam Guy (Terry Sanford) and included recently graduated high school seniors from Cumberland County schools including Seventy First, Jack Britt, Pine Forest, Terry Sanford and South View.

The presentation of the $1,000 Grainger Barrett Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Lumbee River EMC’s Sean Sanderson of Purnell Swett High School, who showed tremendous hustle throughout the game. At the plate, Sean recorded a double and run scored, while also pitching the final inning of the game, striking out one and earning the save.

Earlier in the day, each player was invited to take part in a luncheon catered by Fazoli’s at the Kiwanis Recreation Center. Each player got a chance to interact with their new teammates and receive great insight on what it takes to succeed after high school by guest speaker, Dave Eavenson, Assistant Director of Athletics at Methodist University.

The game celebrates the accomplishments of local high school seniors and gives them an opportunity to play a final game in their high school uniforms. It’s hosted by the Fayetteville SwampDogs and presented by Lumbee River EMC and South River EMC.
