Sandhills Senior Showcase Ends 4-2

  • in

The 9th Annual Sandhills Senior Showcase presented by Lumbee River EMC and South River EMC took place Sunday night at The Swamp. Team South River EMC defeated team Lumbee River EMC 4-2.

The teams are comprised of just graduated high school seniors from the area. The game offers these young men one last opportunity to don their high school uniforms in front of the hometown crowd. The MVP of the game received the Grainger Barrett Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 towards their college tuition.

The scoring was slow and steady throughout the night. Team Lumbee River took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Team South River would tie the game in the third.  They would plate two more in the fifth and the final run in the eighth inning. Team Lumbee River, trailing by three in the ninth inning, looked to make it interesting before the final out. After scoring one run to make it a 4-2 ballgame, they had a man in scoring position before the final batter struck out to end the game.

The MVP of the 2017 Sandhills Senior Showcase and recipient of the Grainger Barrett Memorial Scholarship was Anthony Lane of Terry Sanford High School. The shortstop will be attending Furman University in the fall.

Thank you to Lumbee River EMC and South River EMC for their continued support of this tremendous event.
