Hawkins’ Home Run Lifts Dogs Past ‘Manders

The Fayetteville SwampDogs (4-2) topped the Holly Springs Salamanders (3-4) 2-1 at the North Main Athletic Complex in Holly Springs Wednesday night.

The Salamanders got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth when they scored on a ground ball to second with one out. The bats remained quiet for both teams after that until the top of the eighth inning.

Justin Hawkins (Clemson) launched a solo homerun to left field to tie the game 1-1 for the Fayetteville SwampDogs. Marquise Lanier (Chowan) then reached on an error. He stole second, then advanced to third on a Tim Hergert (Missouri Baptist) infield single. He then scored on an error giving the SwampDogs a 2-1 lead.

The Salamanders threatened in the bottom of the eighth after a two out double from Mark Colella (Seton Hall) and a single from Logan Porter (Dixie State) but the combined effort from SwampDogs pitchers Justice Sampson (North Carolina Central) and Ricky Heagarty (Austin Peay), along with a throw out at home plate from left fielder Mike Spooner (Stetson) helped seal the win.

Austin Edgette (Bloomsburg), who is currently ranked fifth in the CPL in batting average, and Hawkins led the way for the SwampDogs. Each finished the win with a pair of hits.

Griffin McLarty (College of Charleston) moves to 2-0 on the season for the SwampDogs after he worked through 4-1/3 innings, gave up only four hits, one run, three walks, and struck out five.

The SwampDogs return to The Swamp tonight when they take on the Edenton Steamers at 7:05 p.m. for Go Green and Spring Lake Night.
