Dogs Late Rally Falls Short
Fayetteville N.C. – The Edenton Steamers (4-4) recorded 9 runs in the final three innings in Thursday night’s victory over the Fayetteville SwampDogs (4-3).
The Steamers wasted no time when they got on the board in top of the first inning. The SwampDogs failed to answer and both teams went down in order until the top of the third inning when the Steamers led off with a Connor Kopach (Southern Illinois University) triple to center field. After a walk and a stolen base, James Battley (University of Illinios – Springfield), Billy Wilson (Loyola Marymount University) doubled to left center with Kopach and Battley in scoring position putting the Steamers up 3-0.
The SwampDogs answered in the bottom of the third when Jay Robinson (New Orleans) reached on an error. After stealing second base, Tim Hergert (Missouri Baptist) singled to right field bringing in Robinson on a throwing error by the Steamers’ right fielder.
The Steamers continued to put pressure on the SwampDogs’ defense in both the fourth and the fifth innings but the SwampDogs held their ground and the score remained 3-1 until SwampDogs Marquise Lanier (Chowan) blasted a solo homerun over the left field fence narrowing the deficit to 3-2.
The Steamers started to widen the gap in the top of the seventh after back to back doubles and a base hit with runners in scoring position. The Steamers scored three times in the 7th increasing their lead to 6-2. In the top of the eighth, the Steamers struck again, scoring three more times off the bat of a Jason Agresti (Binghamton University) three run homer. And it was more of the same in the 9th when the Steamers put three more on the board running the tally to 12-2.
Although the SwampDogs could not muster a hit through the seventh or eighth innings, they showed their tenacity in the 9th when the SwampDogs added two runs from three hits. Alex Hull (Cal State Northridge) got things going with a base hit through the right side. Jonathan Allen (San Francisco) then followed, reaching on an error, putting runners on first and second. Jayson Newman (Cal State Northridge) loaded the bases after hitting a single through the right side. Lanier picked up another RBI as he singled through the left side scoring Hull. Mike Spooner (Bloomsburg) then picked up an RBI when he drew a two-out, bases loaded walk, scoring Allen.
The SwampDogs finished the game with 5 hits. Lanier led the SwampDogs with two hits and two RBIs.
The SwampDogs look to bounce back tonight as they are on the road to take on the Wilson Tobs at Historic Flemings Stadium and will return to The Swamp on Monday, June 12th for Go Bananas night as they take on the Savanah Bananas.
