Copperheads Bite SwampDogs in Extras

ASHEBORO, N.C. – Despite excellent pitching the Fayetteville SwampDogs relinquished a late lead on the road to fall 3-2 to the Asheboro Copperheads Friday night on the road.

Zack Martinelli (Seton Hill) tossed a brilliant game for the ‘Dogs, scattering six Asheboro hits over six innings and holding the Copperheads to just one run.

Martinelli received early support as the SwampDogs beautifully manufactured a run in the third. Trey Vickers (Wichita State) and AJ Gallo (Towson) both singled before a sacrifice bunt from Nick Maton (Eastern Illinois) put runners on second and third with one out. Pat Donnelly (Lehigh) swatted the first pitch he saw into centerfield for an RBI sacrifice fly.

The SwampDogs protected the 2-1 lead all the way into the ninth with Martinelli giving way to David Mirriggi (Towson) in the seventh inning. Mirriggi was excellent as well throwing two scoreless innings before the Copperheads capitalized on a drop fly ball to start the ninth and eventually tied the game.

The SwampDogs fell in the ninth after two lead-off walks put the winning run in scoring position. With the bases loaded, a fielder’s choice scored the run as the SwampDogs  barely missed turning a double play.

With the loss, Fayetteville drops back to 2-2. Asheboro remains undefeated with the win, improving to 3-0.

The ‘Dogs return home Saturday night for Fireworks presented by Mountaire Farms. The first 500 fans over 21 receive a gift courtesy of Healy Wholesale. Four lucky fans will have the opportunity to win a car courtesy of Fayetteville Kia.
