Fayetteville, N.C.–In a game dominated by pitching, the Eastern All-Stars shone bright with a three-run eighth inning to win the 2016 Coastal Plain League All-Stars 4-3 on Monday night at The Swamp.
The East, containing four hometown Fayetteville SwampDogs, trailed 3-1 heading into the eighth inning before finally breaking through. Jimmy Latona (Gastonia Grizzlies) ripped a single to start the inning before Kurt Sinnen (Peninsula Pilots) belted a game-tying two-run homer to tie the game.
Tyler Weyenberg (Morehead City Marlins) roped a single before Mark Donadio (Wilmington Sharks) doubled to put runners on second and third. SwampDog Matt Lahn then drove a sacrifice fly into deep right center field to score Weyenberg and give the East the lead.
Christian Campbell nailed down the save in the ninth before the rains came.
Like the rain, the East was held at bay for much of the game by excellent pitching from the Western Division All-Stars. The East had just one single through the first seven innings while West Pitchers racked up the strikeouts. Beau Sulser (Savannah Bananas) struck out two of the three hitters he faced. Taylor Sugg (HP-Thomasville), Chaz Miller (Forest City Owls), and Bryan Blanton (Asheboro) all pitched scoreless innings for the West.
Barrett Loseke (Gastonia Grizzlies) struck out the side for the West in the fourth inning to earn Pitcher of the Game Honors while Sinnen earned Hitter of the Game.
The Coastal Plain League will take Tuesday off before starting the back stretch of the season on Wednesday.
